Effect of using antioxidants in chicken semen extender on stored semen traits(Article)

Abstract

The study was conducted to investigate the effect of adding various antioxidants to Lake diluent. The diluents used in the study were Lake (control), Lake plus taurine, Lake plus white tea and Lake plus trehalose, to dilute chicken semen and record their effect on semen quality traits. 14 males and 48 females of broiler breeder Ross 308 at 30 weeks of age were used in the experiment. The males were evaluated for sperm quality traits and selected for sperms concentration in semen to establish two genetic groups for highest sperms concentration and the lowest sperms concentration. A pool sample collected from each group separately and the pool sample divided into four parts each part diluted with different diluent and storage at 0°C for 2, 48, 72, 120 hours. The measurements were recorded for the following traits: individual motility, dead sperm percentage, abnormal sperm percentage and pH of semen after storage periods. The results showed significant differences between genetic groups in the individual motility trait. The Lake plus Taurine diluent recorded significant lower abnormal sperms percentage compared with other diluents. While the pH recorded significant higher value compared with trehalose. The storage period 2h had significant higher individual motility compared with others, while the abnormal sperms percentage at 2, 48 and 72 hours were low compared with 120 hours. There were significant interaction between taurine and genetic groups abnormal sperms percentage. © 2021
